MIDI Copyright Notice meta message

The MIDI copyright notice meta message places a copyright notice in a MIDI file.

This message belongs to the category of MIDI meta messages. Since this is a meta message, it may exist in MIDI files, but it is never sent over MIDI ports to a MIDI device.

This message consists of a variable number of bytes of data. The first byte is the status byte and has a hexadecimal value of 0xFF, which shows that this is a meta message. The second byte is the meta message type 0x02 and shows that this is a copyright notice meta message. The third byte carries the length of the text to follow in bytes. The remaining bytes carry the copyright notice in ASCII text. The copyright notice itself should contain the copyright symbol © (0xA9 in ASCII), the year of the copyright, and the copyright owner.

The following is an example of a MIDI copyright notice meta message.

0xFF 0x02 0x1E 0xA9 0x20 0x32 0x30 0x30 0x39 0x20 0x4B 0x61 0x6C 0x69 0x6F 0x70 0x61 0x20 0x50 0x75 0x62 0x6C 0x69 0x73 0x68 0x69 0x6E 0x67 0x2C 0x20 0x4C 0x4C 0x43

The status byte 0xFF shows that this is a meta message. The second byte is the meta type 0x02 and shows that this is a copyright notice meta message. The third byte is 0x1E (30 decimal), which means that the text to follow has 30 characters. These characters are “© 2009 Kaliopa Publishing, LLC” (without the quotes).

This message has a delta time of 0 and occurs in the first track chunk of the MIDI file before any nonzero delta time messages.
