Orinj Platform independence

Orinj version 3.0.0

Orinj was designed, to the extent possible, to be independent of the operating system or sound devices (soundcards).

Any operating system

Orinj will work on any computer and operating system that supports the Java Runtime Environment 1.5 or higher. Orinj has been tested on various versions of Windows, MacOS, and Linux. It is also designed so that it will allow recording sessions to be transferred from one operating system to another by simply copying session and audio files.

Any sound device

Orinj is similarly independent of the sound devices (soundcards) that you use and has been tested on various soundcards.

Java Runtime Environment (JRE)

JRE 1.5 is the first version to allow simultaneous synchronized playback and recording. Thus, Orinj works on JRE 1.5 or higher.

In previous JRE versions, one could record while playing, but the end result would not necessarily be properly synchronized. For example, a musician can record a vocal track while listening to a guitar track, but may find out at the end that the timing of the recorded vocals does not match the timing of the guitar. Thus, even though Orinj will also work on previous JRE versions, the end result is probably not what a musician would want. This also means that Orinj will not work properly on, for example, older versions of MacOS - the ones prior to MacOS X 10.4 (Tiger), as those do not support JRE 1.5.
