Pulse code modulation, or simply "PCM", is the process of digitally representing an analog signal by sampling it at uniform intervals (the sampling rate), where the signal amplitude is usually represented with comparable amplitudes (the sampling resolution).
Pulse code modulation is thus a process to present a continuous analog signal as a discrete digital signal. The format of standard wave files, for example, is the pulse code modulation format, as the sound is sampled at uniform intervals (at a certain sampling rate) and recorded with comparable amplitudes (the sampling resolution).
