Subtonic

The subtonic is the seventh note on a heptatonic scale.

The subtonic is called so as it is the note below the tonic. Usually, the seventh note on a heptatonic scale would be called the leading tone as it leads to the tonic, and the term "subtonic" would be used specifically for the seventh note on the natural minor scale as it is a whole step below the tonic. For example, the subtonic of the minor A scale is G.
